The Russell County Sheriff Dept. and the Lucas Area Community Theater hosted free movies on Dec. 31st for the area communities. The audience of over 160 watched "The Muppets" & "New Year's Eve". Wonderful Lucas Santa Claus Day

The weather was perfect for the Lucas Santa Claus Day on Dec. 17th at the Lucas Theater. Santa had no snow storms to delay his visit with the kids. About 150 people enjoyed the business and Christmas drawings, free movie with pop and popcorn, and 75 kids gave Santa their Christmas list.

The Lucas PRIDE Committee awarded Raquel Sharp with the 2011 Youth Community Service Award which included a certificate, $100 scholarship, and Cougar glass etching for her many years of community service. Raquel finished her senior year in Natoma High School where she continued to excel as a volunteer in Lucas and at school. She was the SADD club President and the Vice-President of the Junior Sate of America club. Her community service in Lucas included the Lucas Theater, Lucas Area Chamber of Commerce festival and community dinners, and the Lucas PRIDE Mini Park Christmas decorations. Raquel is a valuable asset to the Lucas community.

The Lucas Medical Foundation thanked Kayanne Meitler for her years of service to the Lucas Community with a plaque and stained glass angel. The community applauded Kayanne for her dedication to the area communities.

The winners of the business drawings and Christmas Decorations Contest were announced. Brant’s Meat Market gave two $25 gift certificates to Georgia Schwemmer and Alicia Seirer. Leach and Naegele Hardware gave two $25 gift certificates to Ramona Echer and Steve Hawkins. The winner of the year subscription to the Lucas/Sylvan News was Melissa Hawkins. Troy’s Grocery gave a $ gift certificate to Jessica Seirer. Winner of the Lucas Theater drawings were Dayton Couse was drawn for the 24” Youth Bicycle while Selena Molina, Abby Scinto, and Bridget Lantz each received a 10 movie punch card. Winners of the Chamber of Commerce Drawings were Dayton Couse and Darcy Couse. The PRIDE Christmas Decorations Contest winners were Danny Steinle for Judges Choice, Tereasa Erbert for the Santa Claus is Coming to Town song, and Gordon Bretz was drawn from the names of those who had Nativities in their yard. Next year the categories will be Judges Choice, the Oh Christmas Tree song, and Nativities. Start thinking about your strategy for decorating your yard in 2012. Take a drive around town and enjoy the decorations while visiting the Lucas PRIDE Mini Park to enjoy the dancing lights and Christmas carols.

The free pop and popcorn during the free movie of Arthur Christmas in 3D was much appreciated by kids and adults. Santa landed at the Theater just after the movie to visit with the kids. Brianna Steinle helped the kids on stage to visit Santa, while Rita Sharp took pictures of their visit on Santa’s lap. Raquel Sharp handed out the treats to each kid sponsored by the city of Lucas and Lucas Chamber of Commerce. Santa has a lot of presents to get ready for Christmas morning.

Holiday Gift Show was Great for Local Shopping!

On Nov. 19th at the Lucas Theater from 9am to 3pm. KAYS Club had a Bake Sale at 9am till it was all SOLD. The Lucas Chamber of Commerce Lunch Stand from 11am to 1pm had delicious pulled pork sandwiches or hot dogs, chips, cookies or brownies, and drink. Vendors included Mary Kay cosmetics, handmade jewelry, stained glass and etchings, paintings, quilt wall hangings, gifts for your pets, Avon products, embroidered gifts, Scentsy products, Miche purses, crochet items, bird houses, It Works Body Applicators, and Christmas ornaments. Thirteen vendors and over sixty shoppers enjoyed some early Christmas shopping with Christmas music playing inside and outside on Main Street.

Lucas Spook Parade on Oct. 29th was a success!!

The Annual Spook Parade in Lucas on Oct. 29th at 4pm at the Lucas Theater was a success with over 80 participants. Several Age Categories with prizes. All participants received a goodie bag from the Lucas Area Chamber of Commerce and City of Lucas. Great job on those costumes!!

Lucas Theater Adam's Apple Festival Pulled Pork Meal

The Lucas Area Community Theater served delicious pulled pork sandwich, chips, and drink at the Adam's Apple Festival in the Lucas City Park from 11am until the pork was gone to 130 people. It was a fun day at the park with root beer floats by Bennington State Bank during the meal and entertainment by Brianna Steinle after the meal.

Theater Quilt Show on Aug. 9th & 10th

Lucas Theater Quilt Show on Aug. 9th from 3 - 7 pm and Aug. 10th from 1 - 5 pm. The theme was "Fall and Friendship Quilts". This was a local exhibit to go along with the Kansas Humanities Council "Kansans Tell Their Stories" Traveling Exhibit in Lucas at the Flying Pig Studio and Gallery from July 25th through Sept. 2nd. There were 31 quilts and 14 wall hangings, with other items like pillows, rugs, and afghan. Those who were displaying the quilts were Tess Dunkel-McKnight, Lois Geir, LeeAnn Herold, Mary Lou Steinle, Delma Naegele, Judy Hower, Linda Brant, Lynn Schneider, and Shirley Svaty. Around 35 people viewed the quilts and handiwork from Lucas, Sylvan Grove, Luray, Scott City, Abilene, Salina, Minneapolis, and Brentwood California. Jim Tasker of Minneapolis and his sister from California were very impressed with the community of Lucas with its several attractions and the multifunctional theater facility. The quilt show was a local exhibit of the Kansas Humanities Council "Kansans Tell Their Stories" exhibit which is on display at the Flying Pig Studio and Gallery in Lucas until Sept. 5th. The friendship quilts with names of classmates and teachers or neighbors embroidered on the blocks were fun for local visitors to reminisce over. Other favorites were the t-shirt quilt, grassroots art quilt, and the bright and cheery fall colored quilts. Some of the quilts were hand stitched and hand quilted while several were quilted and bound by the Lucas "quilt shop" of Ray and LeeAnn Herold. The Lucas Theater was a nice cool place to enjoy the warm comfort of the wonderful quilts. The 2012 quilt show theme is "Old and New Memories" to go along with the 125th Anniversary of Lucas.

13th Annual Alumni Hog Roast at Lucas Area Community Theater on May 28th at 11am to 1pm in the Community Room. Roast Hog sandwiches with the fixings by donation along with chances to purchase for a Cougar or Demon Stepping Stone to be given away on May 29th at the Alumni Banquet. Chances for the "1 Year Movie Pass" will be available for purchase that day also to be given away on Sept. 3rd. Proceeds go towards special activities and front repairs at the Lucas Area Community Theater.

Centerstage Dance Recitals

The Centerstage Dance Class, directed by Erin Streit, performed two recitals on May 1st at 2pm & 4:30pm at the Lucas Area Community Theater. Each performance filled over 165 seats in the auditorium. Everyone was pleased with the performances and the dancers had a great time. It was a busy day for the dancers and families. The performances were a great finale for their 2010-2011 Dance year. 4 Told Gospel Quartet from Russell Kansas was unable to perform at the Lucas Theater after the Lucas Chamber Annual Meeting Dinner on Feb. 24th because of the weather. The Quartet will be rescheduled at a later time soon. At 3pm to 5pm in the Theater Community Room, the Lucas Area Chamber of Commerce hosted a Retirement Reception for Connie Dougherty with several braving the weather to wish her well. At 6pm, the Lucas Chamber of Commerce Annual Dinner was served by K-18 Cafe, smothered steak, potato, veggie, and German Chocolate Cake(homemade & delicious). At 7pm, members enjoyed visiting and guessing who the winners of the Academy Awards would be. Those who scored the most correct answers were Von Rothenberger and Eric Abraham. Door prizes were donated by Set in Stone, Garden of Eden, Ad Astra Book Publishing Co., and Lynn's Glass Works. The winners of the door prizes were Connie Dougherty, Michael Dougherty, Kay Marshall, Erika Nelson, Ginger Langdon, and Sharon Albert.

The Lucas Area Community Theater celebrated its 10th year of hosting the Lucas Santa Claus Day on Dec. 18th. The crowd was steady coming through the doors before 1 p.m. with over 100 people enjoying the Chamber Business Drawings, free small pop and popcorn, free movie, and Santa, of course.

Announcements were made for the Business Drawings. Brant’s Meat Market gave out two $20 gift certificates to Danny Naegele and Mary Naegele. Leach and Naegele Hardware gave out two $25 gift certificates to Dave Bricker and Ryan Wolting. The Pony Express Community Bank winners were Steve Hawkins with a $15 gift certificate and Marlys Yarnell with a $10 gift certificate. Troy’s Grocery gave out a $50 gift certificate to Frank Pool and a Nativity Set to Mildred Mettlen. The Lucas Publishing Company gave a free year subscription to Mary Ann Steinle. Lucas Area Community Theater winners were Bailey Evans winning the Wii Game Console, while Jensen Farrington, Gale Kruckenberg, and Mary Ann Steinle each received a 10 Movie Punch Card. Winners of the Chamber Gift Certificates which were drawn out from all the Business Drawing tickets were $50 Gift Certificate to Jamie Beatty, and $25 Gift Certificates to Jeremy Bray and Brent Fredricking. Our Lucas businesses draw several patrons from out of town to Lucas to shop. Way to go Lucas Businesses!

Winners of the Christmas Decorating Contest were Adam Baker for the Judge’s Choice prize of the Christmas Story DVD complete with cap gun and matching pair of miniature leg lamps, Sonny and Lois Cooper for the Rhudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer prize of the Prancer DVD with a Rhudolph singing Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Jim and Vicki McDowell were drawn from a box of about 15 names who had Nativity Scenes for the prize of The Nativity DVD and a nativity stained glass hanging. Take a drive around town and enjoy the lights and decorations, and sit awhile at the PRIDE Mini Park to listen to the Christmas music as the lights dance with the music. Get ready for next year’s Christmas Decorating Contest. The categories will be the Judge’s Choice, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town Song, and Nativity Scene which we will draw a name from all those who have a Nativity Scene.

Fun Ladies Retreat and Concert with Eternity Focus on Dec. 4th

It was a small crowd attending the Ladies Retreat with Eternity Focus at the Lucas Area Community Theater. Eternity Focus led Praise and Worship in the morning and afternoon. Pastor Sandy Kennedy and Mary French from Faith Community Church in Great Bend KS spoke on God's gift of his Son Jesus our salvation and praying His Word. Over 60 people attended the Holiday Gift Show on Nov. 13th, from 10 am to 3 pm at the Lucas Theater, crafters and hostesses showcased their products just in time for shopping for the holidays. Gifts included jewelry, stained glass and etchings, Mary Kay cosmetics, tea towels, knives, Christmas ornaments, Tupperware with a new dealer, Pampered Chef, Miche purses, Smelly Jelly, floral, quilt wall hangings, books, Scentsy Candles, framed photographs, It Works fitness, and Young Living Essential Oils with hand massages and flavored bottles of water. The admission was $1 for adults, $.50 for students, and little ones are free. Winners of the drawings for $10 Gift Show bucks were Trent Leach, Stephanie Svaty, and Charlene Walker, while students and little ones did Make and Take door hangers and bookmarks. Lois Cooper won a gift from It Works and Lola Brant won a gift from Young Living Essential Oils.

Spook Parade on Oct. 30th

The Lucas Area Community Theater hosted the 11th Annual Spook Parade on Oct. 30th at 4pm. The auditorium was packed with friends and relatives of the 68 participants, ranging in ages from under 1 year old to…not sure how old that “antique witch” was. The judges were Lois Cooper, Sharon Albert, Kay Marshall, and Connie Dougherty. They had quite a job picking the “scariest” and “most unique” from the group of animals, witches, devils, spooks, aliens, celebrities, and transformers. Rod Ammons, dressed in his farm chore best, emceed the Spook Parade with the help of Raquel Sharp, Jamie Beatty, Les and Lynn Schneider. Prizes were donated by the Lucas Chamber of Commerce, Lucas PRIDE, Garden of Eden, Troy’s Grocery, and Russell McDonalds. Treats were handed to each of the participants, sponsored by the City of Lucas and Lucas Chamber of Commerce.

The winners were: 1 year olds and under – Braelyn Maupin as a bumble bee was “most unique” and Evan Lamb as a spider was “scariest”, 2 and 3 year olds – Zayne Maupin as Daddy’s Crew Chief was “most unique” and Summer Bates as a witch was “scariest”, 4 and 5 year olds and Kindergarten – Ella Hogan as a cupcake was “most unique” and Susie Gilbert as a devil was “scariest”, 1st and 2nd Grades – Jayan Craven as a witch was “most unique” and Dawson Rhudolph as a white ghost was “scariest”, 3rd Grade – Sasha Albert as Medusa was “most unique” and Keera Maupin as a Zombie was “scariest”, 4th and 5th Grades- Taegen Walter as McDonalds French Fries was “most unique” and Delaney Herold as a witch was “scariest”, 6th thru 12th Grades – Alicia Thomson as a serial (or cereal) killer was “most unique” and Mia Maupin as an Evil Pixie was “scariest”, Adults- Kristi Mettlen as the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Alphabet Tree was the “most unique” and Tony Bricker as an Old Man was “scariest”. It was very “stressing” for the judges. There were some very unique and scary costumes this year. The 6th thru 12th graders did a great job dressing in very unusual costumes and participating in the event – the Halloween Bash down the street later in the evening contributes to some great young adult and adult costumes.

Gene and Kayanne Meitler, Heartland Hay, gave everyone a hayrack ride after the Spook Parade. Everyone had a good time watching and participating in the Halloween event.

Winners of the Great Pumpkin Carving Contest at the Flying Pig Studio and Gallery were announced by Rod Ammons. The People’s Choice votes earned $34.55 for Bowl Plaza. Joel Mettlen was 1st Place with “Nailed” at $8.42, Justin Gray was 2nd Place with “Let Me Out” at $6.80, Joel Mettlen was 3rd Place with “Barbie Eater” at $5.31, and Janea Gray was 4th Place with “Googlie Eyes” at $5.08. Tess Dunkel McKnight did a great job with a demonstration on carving pumpkins for the Haunted Evening event on Oct. 23rd.

All ages had a good time playing Wii Games at the 2nd Annual Wii Games Tournament at the Theater on Sept. 4th. Sixteen participants played boxing, baseball, tennis, and bowling on the big screen. In the ages 11 and under - Boxing - John Piper was 1st, Noah Piper was 2nd; Baseball - Jaylan Schneider was 1st, Noah Piper was 2nd; Tennis - Noah Piper was 1st, Sam Princ was 2nd; Bowling - Sam Princ was 1st, Jaylan Schneider was 2nd. In the ages 12 to 20 - Boxing - Bryce Felio was 1st, Kalvin Piper was 2nd; Baseball - Zack Marchal was 1st, Trai Heenan was 2nd; Tennis - Kalvin Piper was 1st, Trai Heenan was 2nd; Bowling Zach Marchal was 1st, Bryce Felio was 2nd. In the Adults - Justin Gray was 1st and Janea Gray was 2nd.

The Theater Lunch Stand was a success with over 100 people enjoying the pulled pork and baked beans prepared by Frank Pool. Thanks to Connie Urban, the Theater was decorated with Demon and Cougar uniforms. Lynn Schneider prepared a display of pictures showing our volunteers who were Demons and Cougars along with other volunteers who worked in the Theater from the Lucas area. It was a fun and busy day at the Theater and in Lucas!

Trio Globo Concert on June 8th

The Salina Arts and Humanities Foundation sponsored the Trio Globo Concert on June 8th at the Lucas Theater. Trio Globo consists of three Grammy award winning artist/composers: Eugene Friesen, cellist; Howard Levy, harmonica/piano; and Glen Velez, frame drums. Quilt Show on June 9 & 10

The Lucas Area Community Theater hosted a Quilt Show on June 9 and 10. About 47 quilts, wall hangings, and table runners were brought in for display by Tess Dunkel McKnight, Lois Geir, LeeAnn Herold, Geri Parker, Eva Grauer, Shirley Svaty, Luanna Maes, and Lynn Schneider. There were over 60 people who enjoyed looking through the quilts and handmade pieces from all over Kansas, including Lucas, Inman, McPherson, Lindsborg, Canton, Marquette, Galva, Lincoln, Sylvan Grove, Wichita, Wilson, and San Carlos, California. This program is supported in part by the Kansas Arts Commission, a state agency, and by the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Annual Alumni Hog Roast fundraiser for the Lucas Area Community Theater was held on May 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Theater community room. There was plenty of delicious roast hog prepared by Greg Bland and very tasty pork and beans by Frank Pool along with potato salad or chips and tea or water. Over 300 people enjoyed the lunch and visiting with friends and alumni. Winner of the Cougar LLHS Stepping Stone was Michael and Stephanie Svaty. Winner of the Demon LHS Stepping Stone was Dave Bricker.

Jim and Laura Frederick were the 75,000th customer to the Lucas Theater since it opened in Nov. of 2000. Jim and Laura are very good supporters of the Lucas Theater where they have rarely missed a movie. Congratulations!

Wii Games Tournament at Lucas Theater

The Lucas Theater hosted a Wii Games Tournament on the big screens on Sept. 5 from 1 - 5 p.m. during the Annual Lucas Adam's Apple Festival. Overall winner was Justin Gray of Liberal as he won the Golf, Baseball, Tennis, and Bowling games. Second place in Golf was Steve Mathews, in Basball was Jessica George, in Tennis was Trai Heenan, and in Bowling was Jill Tucker. Everyone had a good time and found it was pretty cool playing on the big screen. Several people came in to watch the players and enjoyed seeing what Wii Games were all about. This was a fundraiser for Digital and 3D Equipment for the Lucas Theater. Justin Gray donated half of his winnings back to the Lucas Theater for our fundraiser. Thanks Justin!

Adam's Apple Festival Story Time in the Theater

Kristi Mettlen read several stories to some very eager youth as they ate a hot dog, chips, and orange drink. Kristi had some critters who helped her tell the stories. The kids and parents had a great time while eating their lunch.

Gypsy Theater Company of New York City performed "john and jen" by Andrew Lippa and Tom Greenwald on August 4th, Tuesday, at 7 pm. "A truly original musical that takes a look at the complexities of relationships between brothers and sisters and parents and children, set against the background of a changing America between 1950 and 1990, john and jen is a gem of a show brimming with intelligence, wit and beautiful melodies." by Samuel French. Patriotic Quilt Show at LACT

The Lucas Theater held it's annual Quilt Show on July 1 and 2 with around 50 people looking through the wonderful quilts and wall hangings.

Leann Herold's quilt, Carriage House of Log Cabin Blocks.

Joyce Shipp brought in a table runner and gift bag decorated in patriotic colors. The plane quilt also had plenty of red, white, and blue in it.

Joyce Shipp also displayed the "Between Fences" quilt that Leann Herold and Joyce had made for the Lucas Smithsonian Exhibit. It was used for a raffle and Alden Shipp was the winner of it.

Lois Gier displayed her patriotic wall hangings of Uncle Sam, Stars, Wagon Wheel, and the Rooster.

Lois Gier also brought in this sampler quilt of stars around the eagle.

Eva Grauer made this airplane quilt with alot of blues.

Eva Grauer displayed this quilt of valor that she has made for a serviceman serving the United States in war.

Rose Marie Boland of Alton, Kristie Boland's mother, makes some very nice wall hangings with some red, white, and blue colors.

Rose Marie Boland also has some very patriotic pieces like the Mount Rushmore wall hanging.

Tess McKnight just finished a beautiful red, white, and blue piece to give to her mother.

Dee Durham brought in the Alumni Quilt that is very patriotic. Lots of history on this quilt.

Annie Pyle brought her grandmother's quilt of the 19 30's to 1940's that her mother registered on the Kansas Quilt Project of 1986 with the Kansas Historical Society. The quilt was displayed in the Kansas capitol building.

Jan Tidball exhibited her Log Cabin Star quilt that was just finished in time for the patriotic quilt show. The back also had flag material that set it off nicely.

Driven by Vision Premiere at Lucas Theater

On June 18th at 7:30 pm at the Lucas Theater, the premiere of the Canadian film about Lucas Grassroots Art, "Driven by Vision" was featured. The film is excellent with several historic photos of the Garden of Eden and Lucas businessmen. Over 50 people enjoyed several other short films about other grassroots art artists featured in Lucas. The crowd also watched the Scenic Byway film called "A Drive Through History Along the Post Rock Scenic Byway". Many comments throughout the group was how much publicity the small Kansas town of Lucas has because of its grassroots art heritage. Way to go Lucas!

Alumni Stepping Stone Winners

Chances were sold for a 1 Year Movie Pass to be drawn at the Adam’s Apple Festival on Sept. 5th at the Theater. Also chances were sold for a Demon and Cougar Stepping Stone donated by Lynn’s Glass Works which were drawn for at the LLHS Alumni Banquet on May 24th. Leon Naegele won the Demon, and Cheryl Bretz won the Cougar.

Tipton Prairie Academy Dance Recital

On May 31st, the Prairie Academy of Performing Arts from Tipton Kansas presented a recital at the Lucas Area Community Theater at 2 pm. Debra Houghton is the dance instructor and teaches ballet, tap, and jazz at her studio in Tipton. The Tipton Catholic High School “Wildcard” dance group performed a couple of jazz routines. Pictured from the left, Alyssa Lowe, Reagan Stewart, Courtney Baetz, Destiny Lowe, Grace Grady , and Kolbie Hennes performed Dance of the Reed Pipes.

Mrs. Houghton had a great group of dancers performing from the Nutcracker Suite Ballet and the Sleeping Beauty Ballet, along with tap dances to the Grand Old Flag, Singin’ in the Rain, and a tap music mix. Her Jr high jazz class did a great job on two performances including Fabulous from the High School Musical. At the end of the recital Debra Houghton called all the girls on stage for a group photo and handed out certificates to each girl from her Prairie Academy of Performing Arts. During the Prairie Academy Dance Recital on May 31st, Amanda Henke of Tipton presented the piano solo, “Sonatine for Peace”. She performed the solo on the Lucas Theater’s new piano, which was purchased last year with special donations from the Lucas community. Amanda Henke also presented a vocal solo, “The Song That Nature Sings” with accompaniment by Mrs. Lara Ketter.

11th Annual Alumni Hog Roast at Lucas Theater

What a great day on May 23rd for the Lucas Area Community Theater to host their 11th Annual Alumni Hog Roast. Over 250 friends and alumni enjoyed their delicious roast hog sandwiches and baked beans. Greg Bland and Frank Pool do a fantastic job preparing the fundraiser meal. The crowd enjoyed their meal in the comfortable air-conditioned Theater Community Room.

The Lucas Area Community Theater board of directors with volunteers Lucy, Marissa and Garrett Bland, Bill Herold, and Gary Bretz served the roast hog and fixings. The Women of the Methodist Church had their homemade ice cream set up inside at the back of the stage. Alumni and friends were having a great time visiting and eating their delicious meal and ice cream.

The Lucas Area Community Theater appreciates all the donations and volunteer work that the community provides for the Theater. All proceeds from the hog roast will go towards funding for new digital and 3D equipment to replace the 35mm film movie equipment. Many of the surrounding communities are already switching over to digital equipment, which the movie companies are encouraging this transition to provide the movie patrons with a state-of-the-art quality movie experience at the cinemas.
