Free New Year’s Eve Movie Night

 

The Lucas Area Community Theater did show a free movie on Wednesday, Dec. 31^st at8pm. The movie “Penguins of Madagascar” PG was shown. The free movie was sponsored by the Russell County Sheriff Department and the Lucas Area Community Theater. It is a great community service for the Russell County Sheriff Department and the Lucas Theater to provide drug-free and alcohol-free entertainment for the Lucas area communities.

Lucas PRIDE Awards for 2014

 

On Dec. 20^th, at the Lucas Area Community Theater, the Lucas PRIDE Committee announced that Trai Heenan was the recipient of the $100 Scholarship 2014 PRIDE Youth Leadership Award. Trai was unable to attend the Santa Claus Day event for his presentation, but we appreciate his volunteer work in the Lucas area community. Trai supported the Lucas community with his volunteer work at the Lucas Area Community Theater, as well as projects with the Kids For Christ youth group like community dinners, Adam’s Apple Festival activities, Alumni Weekend projects, and clean up projects in the community. Volunteer work is a great asset to students applying for college. Trai is a student at North Central Technical College in Hays, majoring in Plumbing, Heating, Air, and Electrical.

 

Erika Nelson was awarded the PRIDE Partnership Award for her work as a great ambassador for Lucas as she travels America documenting World’s Largest Things. Erika created the World’s Largest Souvenir Plate of Lucas, World’s Smallest Mural, and the Czechoslovakian Historical Downtown Mural in the Lucas PRIDE Mini Park. She is a Kansas Humanities Speaker traveling Kansas speaking about grassroots art and folk art. Erika also was instrumental to the conservation and relocation of Miller’s Park in Lucas, working with the Kohler Foundation and Henry Schwaller of Hays to bring the Roy and Clara Miller sculpture collection back to Lucas. She also serves on the board of directors for the Friends of S. P. Dinsmoor’s Garden of Eden. Erika Nelson has been a great asset to the community so we recognize her talents and endeavors to keep Lucas a vital and prosperous community.

 

 

Lucas Santa Claus Day Business Drawing Winners

 

The Lucas Area Community Theater hosted the Annual Santa Claus Day festivities on Dec. 20^th at 1pm. Announcements were made for the Business Drawings.  Brant’s Meat Market gave out two $20 gift certificates to Lynnette Shearer and Les Schneider.  Leach and Naegele Hardware gave out a $25 gift certificate to Janelle Winkler and a $15 gift certificate to Kyle Frederking. The Bennington State Bank winners had several winners of $25 gift certificates and prizes. Troy’s Grocery gave away three gift certificates to Brent Frederking, Joan Mather, and Summer Bates.  Backstreet Bakery winners, Ruth Sorenson and Jon Pancost, each receive a delicious pie. The Lucas Publishing Company gave two free year subscriptions to Shirley Svaty and Stacey Letsch. The Lucas Parks and Recreation Committee gave fun Board Games to Corben Ammon, Jazmin Sommerland, Dan Milbern, and Steve Hawkins. Lucas Area Community Theater winners were Savannah Ammon winning the 24” Youth Bicycle, while Sarah Anschutz, Bailey Evans, and Ronald Frederking, each received a 10 Movie Punch Card.  Winners of the Chamber Gift Certificates which were drawn out from all the Business Drawing tickets were $50 Gift Certificate to Dharma Couse, and $25 Gift Certificates to JoEllen Feil and Yazmine Etienne. It pays to shop local!

 

Aunt Gertie’s Art and Antiques and Perry’s Pallet “ture” provided some additional prizes at the business drawings. LaDana Seirer and Taylor Fallis were the winners drawn.

 

Winners of the Christmas Decorating Contest were Jim & Janelle Winkler for the Judge’s Choice, the Garden of Eden with the Angel decoration, and Kristi Mettlen was drawn for the Nativity Scene.  There are so many great Christmas decorations in the Lucas community, be sure to take a drive around town to enjoy the decorations and lights. Next year the Lucas PRIDE Committee will plan some new decorating contest ideas for the community. Watch for more information in 2015.

 

A crowd of around 70 people enjoyed the free Pepsi and popcorn sponsored by the Lucas Area Community Theater, Inc. and the free movie “How To Train Your Dragon 2” sponsored by Lucas Lions Club, Lucas Area Chamber of Commerce, Lucas PRIDE, Troy’s Grocery, Home Oil Service, Heinze and Associates, Brant’s Meat Market, Rodrick and Minear Funeral Home, Lucas Publishing Company, Bennington State Bank of Lucas and Sylvan Grove, Lucas RV Park and Laundry, The Farmers Bank of Osborne and Luray, Rudy and Rhonda Haberer, Garden of Eden, and Grassroots Art Center.  Santa Claus arrived after the movie to visit with about several little (and big) boys and girls about what they wanted for Christmas. Dharma Couse helped to line up the kids for Santa to get their Christmas list and Rita Sharp took some great pictures of the kids with Santa. Yasmine Etienne and Jedd Rowden helped Santa hand out the treats which were sponsored by the City of Lucas and Lucas Area Chamber of Commerce. 

 

 

Friends of the Garden of Eden Scholarship

 

Michaela Merchant was awarded a scholarship as a 2014 high school graduate employee of the Garden of Eden. Erika Nelson of the Friends of S.P. Dinsmoor’s Garden of Eden presented Michaela a certificate and $100 for her work as a docent, telling the story of Dinsmoor’s Cabin Home and sculptural garden. Michaela is a student at Hays State University, studying Psychology.  

Holiday Gift Show

Everyone had a great time at the Holiday Gift Show on Nov. 22 at the Theater. The vendors and shoppers were pleased with the day. Sloppy Joes and Baked Goods were enjoyed by all. The Chamber of Commerce Spin the Wheel for a Prize was a big hit for some fun entertainment. Remember next year - the Holiday Gift Show is always the Sat. before Thanksgiving.

"Samplers and Appliques" Quilt Show

The Lucas Area Community Theater had their annual Quilt Show on July 22-24, 2014. The theme was "Samplers and Appliques". There were around 35 quilts displayed on stage, in the back community room, and in the auditorium. Also some nice embroidered framed pieces were on exhibit. Some of the quilt artists were LeAnn Herold, Sarah Brown, Geraldine Parker, Rose Boland, Lois Cooper, and several old and new friendships quilts made locally.


Lynn Schneider did some demonstrations showing some quick quilt piecing techniques. Several were interested in taking some classes this fall and winter.


Marissa Bland played a variety of songs on the piano on July 22nd for several ladies and gentleman. James Merchant joined her as he sang along with her music.


The Lucas Area Community Theater will not have a quilt show in 2015. It has been decided to wait until March of 2016 to exhibit the quilts in the winter, hopefully it will draw a better attendance in cooler weather. Watch for classes in quilting during 2015.

Centerstage Dance Recital on May 4th

Erin Streit"s Centerstage Dance groups performed on May 4th to a full house for both shows. Family and friends enjoyed the theme - "Let's Go to the Movies!"

Free Easter Matinee on April 19th at 3pm

The Lucas Area Community Theater  hosted a Free Easter Matinee on April 19th at 3pm with a Free Small Pepsi and popcorn with over 100 people enjoying the movie and popcorn. The movie "Epic" in 2D rated PG will be showing.
