Gypsy Theatre Company Performs at LACT

Gypsy Theater Company of New York City performed "john and jen" by Andrew Lippa and Tom Greenwald on August 4th, Tuesday, at 7 pm. "A truly original musical that takes a look at the complexities of relationships between brothers and sisters and parents and children, set against the background of a changing America between 1950 and 1990, john and jen is a gem of a show brimming with intelligence, wit and beautiful melodies." by Samuel French. Patriotic Quilt Show at LACT

The Lucas Theater held it's annual Quilt Show on July 1 and 2 with around 50 people looking through the wonderful quilts and wall hangings.

Joyce Shipp brought in a table runner and gift bag decorated in patriotic colors. The plane quilt also had plenty of red, white, and blue in it.

Joyce Shipp also displayed the "Between Fences" quilt that Leann Herold and Joyce had made for the Lucas Smithsonian Exhibit. It was used for a raffle and Alden Shipp was the winner of it.

Lois Gier displayed her patriotic wall hangings of Uncle Sam, Stars, Wagon Wheel, and the Rooster.

Lois Gier also brought in this sampler quilt of stars around the eagle.

Eva Grauer made this airplane quilt with alot of blues.

Eva Grauer displayed this quilt of valor that she has made for a serviceman serving the United States in war.

Rose Marie Boland of Alton, Kristie Boland's mother, makes some very nice wall hangings with some red, white, and blue colors.

Rose Marie Boland also has some very patriotic pieces like the Mount Rushmore wall hanging.

Tess McKnight just finished a beautiful red, white, and blue piece to give to her mother.

Dee Durham brought in the Alumni Quilt that is very patriotic. Lots of history on this quilt.

Annie Pyle brought her grandmother's quilt of the 19 30's to 1940's that her mother registered on the Kansas Quilt Project of 1986 with the Kansas Historical Society. The quilt was displayed in the Kansas capitol building.

Jan Tidball exhibited her Log Cabin Star quilt that was just finished in time for the patriotic quilt show. The back also had flag material that set it off nicely.

Driven by Vision Premiere at Lucas Theater

On June 18th at 7:30 pm at the Lucas Theater, the premiere of the Canadian film about Lucas Grassroots Art, "Driven by Vision" was featured. The film is excellent with several historic photos of the Garden of Eden and Lucas businessmen. Over 50 people enjoyed several other short films about other grassroots art artists featured in Lucas. The crowd also watched the Scenic Byway film called "A Drive Through History Along the Post Rock Scenic Byway". Many comments throughout the group was how much publicity the small Kansas town of Lucas has because of its grassroots art heritage. Way to go Lucas!

Alumni Stepping Stone Winners

Chances were sold for a 1 Year Movie Pass to be drawn at the Adam’s Apple Festival on Sept. 5th at the Theater. Also chances were sold for a Demon and Cougar Stepping Stone donated by Lynn’s Glass Works which were drawn for at the LLHS Alumni Banquet on May 24th. Leon Naegele won the Demon, and Cheryl Bretz won the Cougar.

Tipton Prairie Academy Dance Recital

On May 31st, the Prairie Academy of Performing Arts from Tipton Kansas presented a recital at the Lucas Area Community Theater at 2 pm. Debra Houghton is the dance instructor and teaches ballet, tap, and jazz at her studio in Tipton. The Tipton Catholic High School “Wildcard” dance group performed a couple of jazz routines. Pictured from the left, Alyssa Lowe, Reagan Stewart, Courtney Baetz, Destiny Lowe, Grace Grady , and Kolbie Hennes performed Dance of the Reed Pipes.

Mrs. Houghton had a great group of dancers performing from the Nutcracker Suite Ballet and the Sleeping Beauty Ballet, along with tap dances to the Grand Old Flag, Singin’ in the Rain, and a tap music mix. Her Jr high jazz class did a great job on two performances including Fabulous from the High School Musical. At the end of the recital Debra Houghton called all the girls on stage for a group photo and handed out certificates to each girl from her Prairie Academy of Performing Arts. During the Prairie Academy Dance Recital on May 31st, Amanda Henke of Tipton presented the piano solo, “Sonatine for Peace”. She performed the solo on the Lucas Theater’s new piano, which was purchased last year with special donations from the Lucas community. Amanda Henke also presented a vocal solo, “The Song That Nature Sings” with accompaniment by Mrs. Lara Ketter.

LACT Alumni Hog Roast

11th Annual Alumni Hog Roast at Lucas Theater

What a great day on May 23rd for the Lucas Area Community Theater to host their 11th Annual Alumni Hog Roast. Over 250 friends and alumni enjoyed their delicious roast hog sandwiches and baked beans. Greg Bland and Frank Pool do a fantastic job preparing the fundraiser meal. The crowd enjoyed their meal in the comfortable air-conditioned Theater Community Room.

The Lucas Area Community Theater board of directors with volunteers Lucy, Marissa and Garrett Bland, Bill Herold, and Gary Bretz served the roast hog and fixings. The Women of the Methodist Church had their homemade ice cream set up inside at the back of the stage. Alumni and friends were having a great time visiting and eating their delicious meal and ice cream.

The Lucas Area Community Theater appreciates all the donations and volunteer work that the community provides for the Theater. All proceeds from the hog roast will go towards funding for new digital and 3D equipment to replace the 35mm film movie equipment. Many of the surrounding communities are already switching over to digital equipment, which the movie companies are encouraging this transition to provide the movie patrons with a state-of-the-art quality movie experience at the cinemas.
