Fantastic Lucas Santa Claus Day, Dec. 18th at 1 pm at Theater

The Lucas Area Community Theater celebrated its 10th year of hosting the Lucas Santa Claus Day on Dec. 18th. The crowd was steady coming through the doors before 1 p.m. with over 100 people enjoying the Chamber Business Drawings, free small pop and popcorn, free movie, and Santa, of course.

Announcements were made for the Business Drawings. Brant’s Meat Market gave out two $20 gift certificates to Danny Naegele and Mary Naegele. Leach and Naegele Hardware gave out two $25 gift certificates to Dave Bricker and Ryan Wolting. The Pony Express Community Bank winners were Steve Hawkins with a $15 gift certificate and Marlys Yarnell with a $10 gift certificate. Troy’s Grocery gave out a $50 gift certificate to Frank Pool and a Nativity Set to Mildred Mettlen. The Lucas Publishing Company gave a free year subscription to Mary Ann Steinle. Lucas Area Community Theater winners were Bailey Evans winning the Wii Game Console, while Jensen Farrington, Gale Kruckenberg, and Mary Ann Steinle each received a 10 Movie Punch Card. Winners of the Chamber Gift Certificates which were drawn out from all the Business Drawing tickets were $50 Gift Certificate to Jamie Beatty, and $25 Gift Certificates to Jeremy Bray and Brent Fredricking. Our Lucas businesses draw several patrons from out of town to Lucas to shop. Way to go Lucas Businesses!

Winners of the Christmas Decorating Contest were Adam Baker for the Judge’s Choice prize of the Christmas Story DVD complete with cap gun and matching pair of miniature leg lamps, Sonny and Lois Cooper for the Rhudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer prize of the Prancer DVD with a Rhudolph singing Red-Nosed Reindeer, and Jim and Vicki McDowell were drawn from a box of about 15 names who had Nativity Scenes for the prize of The Nativity DVD and a nativity stained glass hanging. Take a drive around town and enjoy the lights and decorations, and sit awhile at the PRIDE Mini Park to listen to the Christmas music as the lights dance with the music. Get ready for next year’s Christmas Decorating Contest. The categories will be the Judge’s Choice, Santa Claus Is Coming To Town Song, and Nativity Scene which we will draw a name from all those who have a Nativity Scene.

Everyone enjoyed the free Pepsi and popcorn sponsored by the Lucas Area Community Theater, Inc. and the free movie “Cats and Dogs 2” in 3-D sponsored by Lucas Lions Club, Troy’s Grocery, Pony Express Community Bank, Home Oil Service, Heinze and Associates, Brant’s Meat Market, Rodrick and Minear Funeral Homes, Lucas Publishing Company, Bennington State Bank/Sylvan Grove, Land Pride Mfg., and Sylvan Lions Club. Santa Claus arrived after the movie to visit with about eighty little boys and girls about what they wanted for Christmas with Jamie Beatty helping the kids and Rita Sharp taking pictures. Raquel Sharp helped Santa hand out the treats which were sponsored by the City of Lucas and Lucas Area Chamber of Commerce.

75,000th Lucas Theater Customer

Jim and Laura Frederick were the 75,000th customer to the Lucas Theater since it opened in Nov. of 2000. Jim and Laura are very good supporters of the Lucas Theater where they have rarely missed a movie. Congratulations!

Wii Games Tournament at Lucas Theater

The Lucas Theater hosted a Wii Games Tournament on the big screens on Sept. 5 from 1 - 5 p.m. during the Annual Lucas Adam's Apple Festival. Overall winner was Justin Gray of Liberal as he won the Golf, Baseball, Tennis, and Bowling games. Second place in Golf was Steve Mathews, in Basball was Jessica George, in Tennis was Trai Heenan, and in Bowling was Jill Tucker. Everyone had a good time and found it was pretty cool playing on the big screen. Several people came in to watch the players and enjoyed seeing what Wii Games were all about. This was a fundraiser for Digital and 3D Equipment for the Lucas Theater. Justin Gray donated half of his winnings back to the Lucas Theater for our fundraiser. Thanks Justin!

Gypsy Theatre Company Performs at LACT

Gypsy Theater Company of New York City performed "john and jen" by Andrew Lippa and Tom Greenwald on August 4th, Tuesday, at 7 pm. "A truly original musical that takes a look at the complexities of relationships between brothers and sisters and parents and children, set against the background of a changing America between 1950 and 1990, john and jen is a gem of a show brimming with intelligence, wit and beautiful melodies." by Samuel French. Patriotic Quilt Show at LACT

The Lucas Theater held it's annual Quilt Show on July 1 and 2 with around 50 people looking through the wonderful quilts and wall hangings.

Joyce Shipp brought in a table runner and gift bag decorated in patriotic colors. The plane quilt also had plenty of red, white, and blue in it.

Joyce Shipp also displayed the "Between Fences" quilt that Leann Herold and Joyce had made for the Lucas Smithsonian Exhibit. It was used for a raffle and Alden Shipp was the winner of it.

Lois Gier displayed her patriotic wall hangings of Uncle Sam, Stars, Wagon Wheel, and the Rooster.

Lois Gier also brought in this sampler quilt of stars around the eagle.

Eva Grauer made this airplane quilt with alot of blues.

Eva Grauer displayed this quilt of valor that she has made for a serviceman serving the United States in war.

Rose Marie Boland of Alton, Kristie Boland's mother, makes some very nice wall hangings with some red, white, and blue colors.

Rose Marie Boland also has some very patriotic pieces like the Mount Rushmore wall hanging.

Tess McKnight just finished a beautiful red, white, and blue piece to give to her mother.

Dee Durham brought in the Alumni Quilt that is very patriotic. Lots of history on this quilt.

Annie Pyle brought her grandmother's quilt of the 19 30's to 1940's that her mother registered on the Kansas Quilt Project of 1986 with the Kansas Historical Society. The quilt was displayed in the Kansas capitol building.

Jan Tidball exhibited her Log Cabin Star quilt that was just finished in time for the patriotic quilt show. The back also had flag material that set it off nicely.

Driven by Vision Premiere at Lucas Theater

On June 18th at 7:30 pm at the Lucas Theater, the premiere of the Canadian film about Lucas Grassroots Art, "Driven by Vision" was featured. The film is excellent with several historic photos of the Garden of Eden and Lucas businessmen. Over 50 people enjoyed several other short films about other grassroots art artists featured in Lucas. The crowd also watched the Scenic Byway film called "A Drive Through History Along the Post Rock Scenic Byway". Many comments throughout the group was how much publicity the small Kansas town of Lucas has because of its grassroots art heritage. Way to go Lucas!

Alumni Stepping Stone Winners

Chances were sold for a 1 Year Movie Pass to be drawn at the Adam’s Apple Festival on Sept. 5th at the Theater. Also chances were sold for a Demon and Cougar Stepping Stone donated by Lynn’s Glass Works which were drawn for at the LLHS Alumni Banquet on May 24th. Leon Naegele won the Demon, and Cheryl Bretz won the Cougar.

LACT Alumni Hog Roast

11th Annual Alumni Hog Roast at Lucas Theater

What a great day on May 23rd for the Lucas Area Community Theater to host their 11th Annual Alumni Hog Roast. Over 250 friends and alumni enjoyed their delicious roast hog sandwiches and baked beans. Greg Bland and Frank Pool do a fantastic job preparing the fundraiser meal. The crowd enjoyed their meal in the comfortable air-conditioned Theater Community Room.

The Lucas Area Community Theater board of directors with volunteers Lucy, Marissa and Garrett Bland, Bill Herold, and Gary Bretz served the roast hog and fixings. The Women of the Methodist Church had their homemade ice cream set up inside at the back of the stage. Alumni and friends were having a great time visiting and eating their delicious meal and ice cream.

The Lucas Area Community Theater appreciates all the donations and volunteer work that the community provides for the Theater. All proceeds from the hog roast will go towards funding for new digital and 3D equipment to replace the 35mm film movie equipment. Many of the surrounding communities are already switching over to digital equipment, which the movie companies are encouraging this transition to provide the movie patrons with a state-of-the-art quality movie experience at the cinemas.
